Description

Corel Painter 9, Wacom Intuos 3, no estimate of the time taken, 'cause there were breaks in between, but it took a while. ;p

And now for a little backstory:

Once upon a time in a land full of peace and wellbeing, there lived a seer who prayed to the sea. Her power to see the future was uncanny and known to many. As time passed, the day came when the old king died, as predicted by the very seer, and a new one was crowned. The new king was young, full of hope and great plans for the future of his kingdom, and curious of his fate, so the seer was called. But as she laid eyes upon him, she wept. When asked what she saw, the seer uttered: "I can not speak of what I see, for it is too terrible to be said." The king was not satisfied and demanded that she speaks of what she had seen or else she would be punished. The seer nodded and obliged: "Thy rule shall be short and meaningless, and it shall bring nothing but death and suffering for those who live now and for those who will come after. And now that I have said it, the prophecy has sealed itself, and thy fate is set." The king was enraged to hear these words and he ordered the seer be punished by death.

The execution took place that very evening by the sea to which she had prayed so much. Her jaw and tongue were ripped out and she was tossed off a cliff into the raging water. And as her body was devoured by the foams, the king looked into the raging abyss below and thought he saw a face with blank eyes and terrible grin, its watery lips spelling out "death" over and over. Terrified by the vision, the king stepped backwards and lost his balance on the shifty rocks. Moments later his body disappeared among the waves.

Soon after the demise of the young king who had left no children, the country became torn by struggles for power. While it was weak and separated, neighbouring kingdoms saw their chance and went to invade it. Thus began centuries of blood, suffering and war. The prophecy had fulfilled itself.

Frightening and beautifully rendered image. And the story is even better!!! I'm trying to imagine how you even began to paint the people in the waves... inspiring to say the least.

I like this a lot! Crits:
  • Background is too flat, too boring for me
  • The faces in the waves are too apparent and perhaps too few. I would have liked to see them blend in more. The hands are a really good touch though.

Beautiful! I really love the faces coming out of the water. Is she comprised of water or some other essence? Because I wonder if the lack of detailing and the seemingly almost plastic finish to her chest area is intentional? {And no I'm not one of these people who just wants to see nipples :p I just wondered}

Thanks a lot for all the comments!

 PaleMajesty - that change of material is intentional, for some reason (which I haven't really formulated to myself) I felt that it'd be more appropriate to have her "human" part appear more ceramic, not unlike something of a statue. Those thingies around her shoulders are a little fin-like on purpose, too. I guess turbulent water felt too present and "alive" as opposed to a marble or ceramic finish which reminds of dolls, statues and other "dead" things, often associated with past.

 starqueen - likely a matter of preference. To me it actually seems that some of the faces are too small and subtle. x)

 sanhueza - the original concept had that lower area all scritchy scratchy with waves, but as I was working from top to bottom (and back to forth), detailing water got boring so I elaborated on the scribbles by adding hands and faces, following the same top to bottom and back to forth pattern - for most part. Hope that partially answers the question.

As for prints and all, I do actually have them available on DA, took the liberties to link to the print page in the links section thingy. Hope that's ok to do.

Again, thanks for the comments and pointage. <3

Dammit I just love the way you perform your idea into such an excellent artwork. The seer's upper body is truly outstanding. I really like the water with the waving arms, and I think they're currently not many enough to express the greatness and the fierceness of the scene as the story describes.
However, I wish I could give you 10, but I only have 9, so 9/9.
